Common questions

The quick answers to what most people ask. Don’t see yours? The user guide goes deeper, or get in touch.

PrinceShade dims more than my brightness keys — is that safe?

Yes. PrinceShade lays a translucent dark layer over your screen and optionally warms the colors using the standard macOS display gamma API — the same approach apps like f.lux use. It doesn’t modify your hardware or system settings, and it restores everything when you turn it off or quit.

Does it need any permissions?

No. PrinceShade requests no system permissions — no Location, no Accessibility, no Screen Recording. It just works after launch.

Does it conflict with Night Shift or True Tone?

No. PrinceShade’s warmth and macOS’s Night Shift / True Tone operate at different layers and simply add together. You can run all three.

My external monitor has no brightness control — will it work?

Yes. PrinceShade dims with a software overlay, so it works on any connected display — including monitors that don’t expose a brightness slider in System Settings. You can even give each display its own level under “Per-Display”.

Can it turn on and off automatically?

Yes. In Settings → Schedule you can have the shade switch on and off at fixed times on the days you choose. PrinceShade does not use your location for this — it requests no location access at all.

How do I turn off crash reporting?

Settings → Diagnostics → Error Reports. When it’s off, the app makes no network connections at all.
